Catherine's Visual Diary
“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” -Theodor Seuss Geisel. (Dr. Seuss)
Nowadays people live in a fast world. We keep moving forward and innovating, step-by-step and day-by-day, all in the pursuit of a ‘better life. However, time goes by so fast, and sometimes in its wake we forget the value of each moment, or we lose sight of what is really important.
Our lives are based on change. The things around us change as we move from place to place or country to country. As we lose contact with one person, we make friends with another; people we love die, and others are born,
Through the personal experience of losing my father at a young age, I have come to value the importance of memories. In this body of work, I ask the question “how do I hold onto those memories?” I take photographs to capture special moments from my daily life - like a diary recording memories- but since the camera takes photographs so quickly, it feels like these memories are not so precious. However, when I subsequently draw from these photographs, I slow down - it takes me a long time. Through the time spent drawing from these photographs, I connect with these memories more deeply, and as a result of this deeper engagement. I believe that I will remember them more strongly in the future.
I intend to slow other people down as well. I hope that through the time spent engaged with my work, they will be reminded of their own special memories. I provoke the audience to think about how they collect their own memories because if our memories not recorded, are they lost forever?
